10 Boudoir Trends or Themes to Try

November 17, 2016 Bodacious Betty

Nudescape or Bodyscape:  Usually done nude, but not always

So, beyond lace and leather, what else should you consider when planning your boudoir session?

It’s totally uncheesy (is that a word?) to think about a theme or a trend that appeals to you.  In fact, I actually encourage it because it gives you a role to play; it’s much easier to be uninhibited when you’re playing a character.

Here are a few ideas to help you plan your dream session:

1)   Bodyscapes or Nudescapes:  While there’s not much role-play in shots like this, these are low-key images that are shot against a black backdrop and meant show off the curves of the body while leaving other areas in shadow.  These images can be done in both color or black and white, and look great displayed as wall art.

2)   Bohemian:  Flowers, lace, and gauzy material dominate this look.

The Cat Set from Hips and Curves $14.95

3)   The Cat Lady:  Whether it’s a cat suit or actual cats, you can show off your feminine side with some smoky cat-eyes and voluminous waves.  Add some cat ears or some elbow length gloves and you’re the cat’s meow.

4)   The Chef:  the prop ideas here are endless.  The only wardrobe requirement is an apron of some sort and a pair of stilettos.

5)   White Sheets:  a la Marilyn MonroeWear little or nothing underneath, and just use the sheet to drape or hide areas accordingly.  It’s simple, clean, and timeless.  If you’re not the type to wear lingerie, this is a great theme to go with.

6)   The Movies:  Takes some inspiration from the silver screen, be it 50 Shades of Gray or Harry Potter.   Wear a lace mask over your eyes, or bring a magic wand.  You get the idea.

7)   The Nerd:  If comic books and glasses are your thing, well, pull up your knee highs, and push those glasses up because I’m about to make being a geek , chic.  You’re Welcome.

8)   The Private Investigator, or Whatever Profession. Let your dream job play center stage for a day.

Silver Tapestry Corset and Skirt Set $79.95

9)   The Courtesan:  Let’s put on a Marie Antoinette wig and some thigh highs and let them eat cake.

10)  Couture for Sure! Wear your Louboutins and your La Perla.  I’ll provide the props with all the designer names:  Chanel, Louis, and Dom will all make an appearance.

Ultimately, when it comes to deciding what to wear, and who to be for the day, you want to think with the end in mind (pun intended)!  If you think you will be displaying the images as wall art, think about the colors in the room you will be displaying your art in, and if the chosen theme will fit in with your décor.

Hopefully, I’ve given you some ideas to get the ball rolling.  If you need more, I’m happy to help.

Eat. Pray. Werk!

November 10, 2016 Bodacious Betty

The last rhinestone popped off my designer jeans.  The color was a little too faded, and my muffin top looked like a busted can of biscuits. I had put on a few pounds (read 15lbs) over the past few years, and I put off buying jeans until I could lose some weight.  How many of us can relate to this?

At least with a photoshoot, I can drape and hide with the wardrobe, and get just the right pose.  It doesn’t quite work the same in real life.

Why I Offer In-Home Consults

November 1, 2016 Bodacious Betty

Most of my consults are done over the phone or in-person at my studio, but I really don't mind traveling to the client's home.  I can help choose wardrobe if she already has an idea of what she wants to wear, and I can measure any bare wall space to see what our options are.

This client in particular didn't want just one large piece over her bed but rather a collection of gallery wraps from her session.  We knew ahead of time that with the headboard and ceiling height that a grouping of no more than 24" high would look best.  We also didn't want anything bigger than 45" because it would overwhelm the wall and look out-of-whack.

I created two sample groupings in Photoshop to give her an idea of layout and what the images would look like cropped.  As you can imagine, she chose the grouping below.  It preserves the composition of the images and makes a stronger impact.

The added bonus of doing an in-home consultation with her was that I could see the color palette of her room.  This meant I needed to convert the images to black and white.  (I always shoot in color so that I have the option of converting to black and white later if I wish to;  if I shoot in black and white first, then I cannot convert the image to color.)

I loved that she wasn't afraid to show off her gorgeous body-of-work (You see what I did there?), even with a family full of four children!  It's classy, tasteful, and timeless.
